The Divine Hermaphrodite

It’s on. You are cordially invited to the Royal Wedding! Which seems just perfect for discussing the archetype of the Hermaphrodite. In the first half of my Jungian themed essay I shall explore my personal reflections and in the second, I will continue that journey in the shape of a long prose poem. Love in the Caves

Chained until thirty three,
I was a jailbird of the cave.
Where madness and echoes
embraced the ruling darkness.
My dead eyes locked only
onto the lifeless wall ahead,
where deceiving shadows
soon became my false reality.

The seething fire behind me
knew nothing of friendship.
Nor I, until I scurried away
by posting words of protest
to each reviled, hated brick
of that shadowy ivory tower.
The one that separated me
from sun, moon and stars.

The Soul Is My Mother

I am a student of the unconscious,
a woman in search of her soul.
I seek the wisdom that knows,
without knowing how it knows.
Under the shelter of my dreams
with renaissance in her hands,
a dark-winged mother descends.
She will not seek or hunt for me,
I must keep up with her alone
and learn to trust the darkness.

The shaman is endlessly set apart
with terrifying initiation rites.
Dreams of dismemberment,
shadowed by re-memberment.
A symbolic death and rebirth
for the witch who travels along
mysterious, spiritual realms.
Where lost souls are retrieved
and returned to consciousness
for the everlasting walk of life.
